Description

This animation depicts RNA transcription elongation. RNA polymerase II (gray) travels down a strand of DNA (blue) as it transcribes it into RNA (lilac). When transcription is terminated, RNA polymerase II releases the newly transcribed RNA. This new RNA, or nascent RNA, will have to fully mature into mRNA before it leaves the nucleus.
