This animation shows a STAT protein (red) bound to a segment of DNA (blue). Signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) proteins are a family of seven proteins that regulate the transcription activity of genes. Two STAT molecules will bind together, forming a dimer that will subsequently trigger the transcription of specific genes.
