Description
This animation illustrates a T4-Phage (blue) attacking E. coli, a bacterium (mustard). Bacteriophages are highly selective; their leg-like fibers interact with specific receptors on the surface of their host bacteria. The binding of the legs triggers its shaft to puncture the bacterial envelope and inject viral genetic material from its head, infecting the host bacterium.
