Although the virus mutated relatively quickly in the first two years from alpha through to delta and finally Omicron, it's Omicron that has been the main and now only circulating virus variant since 2022.

At todays press conference Science minister Martin Polaschek named the 5 successful consortia, which were selected after an international peer-review process. Iris Grünert congratulates the entire team for a visionary proposal!

300 Million people worldwide are living with a rare disease! Sickle cell anemia is just one of the many rare diseases out there.
This image shows a blood smear of a patient with sickle cell disease (SCD). SCD is a recessive genetic disorder caused by a mutation in the beta-strand of haemoglobin, leading to the red blood cells hardening and forming a C shape. Symptoms such as hypoxia, abnormal blood clotting, pain and immunodeficiency can be observed in patients.

Food for thought: Get ready to face Superbugs!

Recently, the UN released a new report 'Bracing for Superbugs: Strengthening environmental action in the One Health response to antimicrobial resistance'. Due to an uncontrolled release of antimicrobial pharmaceuticals into the environment by animal farming and pharmaceutical industry as well as insufficient control of sewage and sanitation measures, antimicrobacterial resistance is on the rise. While new antibiotics are increasingly expensive and time consuming to develop, first resistances are appearing sometimes very short after their introduction, as existing Superbugs have developed ways to efficiently add new capabilities to their existing repertoire of drug resistance.

Let's talk Vibrio! These bacteria have a strong flagellum (used for movement) and can travel at amazing speeds! If ingested, they stick to the small intestine producing toxins. This leads to a secretion of sodium and chloride into the lumen, creating a salt water like environment. Due to osmosis the cells then release water, inducing severe dehydration through diarrhea and vomitting.

Vibrio cholerae (shown here) is one of the most problematic bacteria in developing countries. Transmission is often through contiminated water and food due to a lack of proper water supplies and sewage disposal. However, more recently we're seeing a global surge due to wide spread climate change.

On the brighter side, microbiologists are researching for a more effective vaccine!

Since the 18th century fungi have been used to enhance the flavour of various cheeses, creating its typical taste without producing toxins that pose any danger for human beings.

Camembert is treated with Penicillium camemberti which then grows on its surface, producing the bloomy rind appearance. As the mould continues to grow and work its magic, the cheese ripens, developing the characteristic smell and flavour.

We really love our T4 Phage video and judging by the views it looks like we're not alone! 🤩
Bacteriophages attack bacteria in order to reproduce. After docking onto the bacteria with their spiderlike legs, they inject their DNA into the bacteria cell, which allows them to hijack the replication and translation machinery of the bacteria to create hundreds of new phages. Once replication is complete, the bacteria bursts open to release a new wave of phages, ready to invade their next victim. Pretty neat huh! 😎

Have you ever heard of Candida albicans❓

You may not know C. albicans but it knows you! It usually lives as a harmless yeast organism in your gut flora, but for those with weakened immune systems it can grow out of control (candidiasis) and can result in serious health problems, even death.

However, Candida albicans is not always the bad guy. Easily cultivated, it plays an important role as a model organism in research. Allowing important CRISPR/Cas9 adaptations, use as a host organism or in a variety of biotechnology arrays, C. albicans is a complex, useful fungus! 🧪🧫

Fun fact: Candida albicans literally means 'white becoming white' making it a tautology. 🤭

Let's turn back the clocks back to the year 1996 when gene therapy was considered the hope for hereditary diseases. Only a few years later, this field was almost completely abandoned because of the adverse side effects of replacing malfuntioning genes. But all hope was not lost.
