Cervical cancer awareness month
January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month!
Human papillomavirus (HPV) (shown above) is a small, non-enveloped DNA virus that belongs to the Papillomaviridae family. It is a very common virus, with over 100 types identified, and most people will be infected with HPV at some point in their lives.
In most cases, the body’s immune system can clear the HPV infection within two years. However, the long-term effects of HPV infection depend on the type of HPV involved. Some types of HPV, such as the low-risk HPV types 6 and 11, can cause genital warts. Other types of HPV, such as the high-risk HPV types 16 and 18, can cause certain types of cancer, including cervical cancer, anal cancer, oropharyngeal cancer, and penile cancer.
There are effective ways to prevent HPV infection and to detect and treat HPV-related health problems. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent HPV infection. The HPV vaccine can protect against the types of HPV that cause most cervical cancers, anal cancers, and oropharyngeal cancers. The HPV vaccine is recommended for all people ages 11-12. It can also be given to people up to age 26.
